WhatsApp Business Pricing After 1 October 2026: What Small Businesses Need to Know

Since 1 October 2026, WhatsApp Business Platform service messages cost money after 1,000 free a month. What changed, who it affects and how to keep costs down.

In short
  • Since 1 October 2026, replies sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) are charged per delivered message after 1,000 free per number per month.
  • Utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer service window are now charged too.
  • The free WhatsApp Business app on your phone is not affected. Customers' messages to you remain free.
  • Chats from click-to-WhatsApp ads still get a 72-hour free window if you reply within 24 hours.
  • The best way to control cost is to send fewer, better messages: answer completely the first time.

Note: Meta sets and changes WhatsApp prices, and rates differ by country. The figures below come from reputable provider summaries published around the change. Always check Meta's current rate card or your provider before budgeting.

First: which WhatsApp are you using?

There are three different products, and the change only touches one of them:

ProductWho uses itAffected?
WhatsApp (ordinary)Personal useNo
WhatsApp Business appSmall businesses answering from a phoneNo — still free
WhatsApp Business Platform (API)Businesses using an inbox tool, chatbot or AI assistant, usually through a providerYes

If you only use the WhatsApp Business app on your phone, nothing changed for you. If you use any software that connects to WhatsApp — a shared inbox, a chatbot, an AI assistant, or a platform like Rumidza — you're on the Business Platform, and this matters.

How pricing worked before

Since 1 July 2025, Meta has charged the Business Platform per delivered message rather than per 24-hour conversation. Charges depend on the message category (marketing, utility, authentication, service) and the customer's country. Until October 2026, two important things were free:

  • Service messages — normal replies you send while a customer service window is open (the 24 hours after a customer last messaged you).
  • Utility templates sent inside that window (such as order updates).

What changed on 1 October 2026

  • Service messages became billable after a free allowance of 1,000 delivered service messages per business phone number per month. Billing starts at the 1,001st. The allowance resets monthly and does not roll over or get shared between numbers.
  • Utility templates inside the service window became billable, and Techweez reports that these are charged from the first message rather than counting against the 1,000 allowance.
  • Marketing and authentication templates were already charged and are unchanged.
  • Incoming messages from customers remain free.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads and Facebook Page buttons still open a 72-hour free entry point window when you reply within 24 hours.

Providers also advised businesses to add a payment method before the change, since messages beyond the free allowance could otherwise be blocked.

What it costs in some African markets

Techpoint Africa published these Meta base rates per service message, before any provider mark-up:

MarketRate per service message (US$)
Nigeria$0.0101
South Africa$0.0076
Egypt$0.0054
Kenya$0.0044

Rates for other countries, including Zimbabwe, are on Meta's rate card. Providers (called Business Solution Providers) often add their own fee per message on top — Techpoint cites roughly $0.003 to $0.01 or more.

A worked example

A South African shop sends 3,000 service replies in a month from one number. The first 1,000 are free. The remaining 2,000 × $0.0076 = about $15.20 in Meta fees for the month, plus whatever their provider charges. For most small businesses this is modest — but it rewards being efficient, and it adds up quickly for businesses that send many short, unnecessary messages.

Six ways to keep costs down (that also improve sales)

  1. Answer completely in one message. "Yes, in stock — $45, delivery to Avondale $3, today before 5pm. Which colour?" is one message. "Hello!" … "Yes we have it" … "It's $45" … "Delivery is $3" is four.
  2. Put prices where people can see them — catalogue, Facebook page, website — so fewer chats are needed at all.
  3. Don't send "thank you" and "ok 👍" replies by automation. Let the conversation end naturally.
  4. Use click-to-WhatsApp ads deliberately: the 72-hour free window makes ad-driven conversations cheaper to handle.
  5. Be careful with marketing templates. They're charged in every case outside the ad window, and unwanted ones get you blocked. Send them only to people who opted in, and only when you have something worth saying.
  6. Watch your numbers monthly: messages sent, chats, and sales. If messages per sale are rising, your replies are getting less efficient.

How Rumidza handles this

Rumidza connects to WhatsApp through Meta's official Business Platform, so these Meta charges apply to messages sent through it, the same as any other tool. Its AI is designed to give one complete answer — price, stock, delivery and next step — rather than many short messages, and it follows WhatsApp's 24-hour messaging rules. If your volume is low and you're happy answering from your phone, the free WhatsApp Business app is still a perfectly good choice; the guides in our blog work with either.
