Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: Turn Facebook and Instagram Ads Into Sales Chats

How to run ads that open a WhatsApp chat: setup, writing the ad, the free 72-hour window, budgets, and how to tell if your ads actually pay.

In short
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads send people from Facebook or Instagram straight into a chat with you — ideal for businesses that sell through conversation.
  • Get your WhatsApp ready before you pay for ads: profile, catalogue, greeting message and fast replies.
  • Use real product photos and give people a clear reason to message ("Send 'PRICE' for today's offer").
  • On the WhatsApp Business Platform, chats from these ads open a free 72-hour messaging window if you reply within 24 hours.
  • Judge ads by sales per dollar spent, not by clicks or messages.

Most small businesses in Africa don't sell through a website checkout. They sell through a conversation: a customer asks, the seller answers, they agree on price and delivery, and money moves by mobile money, transfer or cash. If that's how you sell, sending ad traffic to a website can waste money. A click-to-WhatsApp ad skips the website and drops the customer straight into the conversation where you're strongest.

What a click-to-WhatsApp ad is

It's an ordinary Facebook or Instagram ad — a photo, a video or a carousel — with a "Send message" (WhatsApp) button. Tapping it opens WhatsApp with a chat to your business, often with a pre-filled first message the customer can send in one tap. Meta also offers ads in WhatsApp Status for some advertisers.

Before you spend anything: get WhatsApp ready

An ad that brings 50 chats you can't answer is worse than no ad, because those people now think you're slow or unreliable. Meta's own small-business guide puts preparing your profile and messages first. Check these off:

  • Complete business profile — name, hours, address, description.
  • Catalogue with the products you'll advertise, with prices.
  • Greeting message that tells people exactly what to send next.
  • Away message for when you're closed.
  • Quick replies for price, delivery and payment questions.
  • Someone available to answer during the hours the ad runs — or an AI assistant that can handle routine questions and pass the rest to you.

Our WhatsApp lead generation guide covers this setup in detail.

How to create one

Option A: from the WhatsApp Business app (simplest)

  1. Open WhatsApp Business → Tools → Advertise.
  2. Connect your Facebook profile and an ad account (you'll need a payment method on the ad account).
  3. Choose an image or video — ideally from your catalogue — and write your text.
  4. Choose your audience. Meta suggests new advertisers start with its automatic (Advantage+) audience and narrow the location to where you can actually deliver.
  5. Set a daily budget and how many days the ad should run.
  6. Review and publish. You can edit, pause or extend it later.

Option B: from Meta Ads Manager (more control)

Create a campaign with an engagement or sales objective and choose messaging apps → WhatsApp as the conversion location. This gives you more control over placements, audiences and testing, and lets you optimise for people likely to reply or buy, not just tap.

Writing an ad people actually message

  • Show the real product. Clear, well-lit photos of what you sell beat logos and stock images. Meta recommends this too.
  • Lead with the benefit and the price if you can. "Solar lights for your stand — from $25, delivered in Harare" is clearer than "Quality products at affordable prices".
  • Give a reason to message now. "Message us for this week's price", "Send 'SIZE' and we'll check your size", "First 20 orders get free delivery".
  • Use a pre-filled message that tells you which ad they came from, e.g. "Hi, I saw the solar lights ad". This makes tracking much easier.
  • Write in your customers' language. If your buyers speak Shona, Zulu or Swahili, an ad in that language can stand out in a feed full of English.

The free 72-hour window (for Business Platform users)

If you answer customers through the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API used by most inbox tools), messages are normally charged per message by Meta. Chats that start from a click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action are treated differently: if you reply within 24 hours, a 72-hour free entry point window opens, during which messages — including templates — are not charged. This is still in place after the pricing change on 1 October 2026, which made ordinary service messages billable beyond a free monthly allowance. We explain those changes in WhatsApp Business pricing after October 2026.

If you use only the free WhatsApp Business app on your phone, WhatsApp doesn't charge you per message at all — you only pay Meta for the ad itself.

Budgets: start small and learn

There's no magic number, and prices vary a lot by country, audience and season. A sensible approach:

  1. Pick a daily budget you'd be comfortable losing while you learn.
  2. Run the ad for at least several days before judging it — the first day or two are often noisy.
  3. Change one thing at a time (the image, the text, or the audience), so you know what made the difference. Meta's guide gives the same advice.
  4. Stop ads that bring chats but no sales, and put more behind the ones that sell.

How to tell if an ad is paying for itself

Ads Manager will show you cost per message. That's useful, but it isn't the number that matters. What matters is sales per dollar spent. For each ad, track:

MeasureHow to work it out
Cost per chatAd spend ÷ new chats from that ad
Chat-to-sale rateSales ÷ chats from that ad
Cost per saleAd spend ÷ sales from that ad
Return on ad spendSales value ÷ ad spend (above 1 means the ad brought in more sales value than it cost; whether that's profit depends on your margin)

A cheap ad that brings lots of "how much?" messages from people who never buy can be worse than a pricier ad that brings fewer, better chats. This is why tracking where each chat came from — and whether it was hot, warm or cold — matters so much.

Common mistakes

  • Advertising to the whole country when you only deliver in one city.
  • No one answering in the evening, when many people scroll and message.
  • Hiding the price and making people ask, then answering slowly.
  • Judging after one day, or changing everything at once.
  • Not following up with people who asked but didn't buy.

Rumidza is built for exactly this flow: it connects to WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram through Meta's official tools, answers ad enquiries in seconds, records which ad each lead came from, and shows you leads and sales by advert in its reports. It can also make the ad images and short videos for you in Studio. But the principles above work with any setup — the businesses that win with these ads are the ones that are ready to answer.

Questions people ask

What is a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

It is a Facebook or Instagram advert with a button that opens a WhatsApp chat with your business, instead of sending people to a website.

Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to run these ads?

No. You can create them from the free WhatsApp Business app (Tools, then Advertise) or from Meta Ads Manager with your WhatsApp number connected to your Facebook Page.

Are messages from these ads free?

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, when a customer comes from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, a 72-hour free entry point window opens in which messages are not charged. Messages sent with the free WhatsApp Business app are not charged by WhatsApp either way.

How much should I spend on my first ad?

Start with a small daily budget you would be comfortable losing while you learn, run it for at least several days, and change only one thing at a time. Judge it on sales, not clicks.
